I got to wish [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning bon voyage after all! As I was driving to work this morning, I noticed this guy who looked suspiciously like the good professor, walking down the side of the busy road and carrying a microwave. Then I saw the little UHaul attached to a familiar pick-up truck and knew it had to be him! Seems the door to the little trailer had opened and some of his possessions had spilled out. Fortunately, some good people stopped before I had happened by, they scooped up some of his belongings. The good news is, nothing was lost! If only I had left for a work a little earlier, I might have been more help. At any rate, I got to wish him safe voyage.

He's on his way, [livejournal.com profile] rougewench! he got on the road around 8 am, after a brief setback. All is well.

I originally met Gamera at a gaming party hosted by a coworker (JA) circa 1994-95. I met him again at an SCA event a couple of years later, but it's only been in the past year and a half or so that I've gotten to know him better. While I'm a little sad that I won't have the pleasure of his company in person, it's good to see him follow his bliss. I'm glad that we can still keep in touch via Live Journal.

I dragged my sorry ass to the grocery store Sunday for a couple of items. While I was wrapping up my transaction, the lady behind me in the check-out line hailed me.

"Do you recognize me?" she asked.

She had obviously dyed ash blond hair, lots of makeup. She looked like my landlady, an emotionally fragile woman. . But I knew that wasn't who this was.

"Ummm...not really."

"You used to work at [employer's name deleted to protect the guilty]. I'm Kathy!" She smiled at my expectantly, as if expecting a big hug.

This woman was my supervisor. She went nuts, fired me and then quit the next day. She had been cooking the books with one of the managing partners. It ended well for me, as they hired me back about three weeks later; eventually as the company grew I was able to do full-time marketing and ad design for them.

When I worked with her, she was very high-strung, wore so much makeup that she left it caked on the phone receiver, and had dark, overly teased helmet hair.

So all this flashes through my head while she's still grinning at me like we're long-lost pals.

"Well - you certainly changed your look," I said, turned to the cashier and finished paying for the groceries.

I wish I could have come up with a better zinger than that. Since I was raised by a polite Southern woman, on-the-fly insults are not my forte.

So today, as I walked to work from the area trusty mechanic (oil change and hopefully nothing more) I thought about previous jobs and what's wrong with this one. rambling while ambling )
